Familia Torres Salmos Priorat 2014
Priorat is a small but unique wine region located in the province of Tarragona at the foot of the Sierra del Monsant. The region consists of towns and villages that were once under the rule of the Carthusian monastery of Escalade. Its uniqueness lies in its climate, orography and geology. The internationally acclaimed wines of Torres owe much of their character to the black slate llicorella soils of the region.
In the mid-1990s, Torres planted vineyards in Porrera and El Loar, where the winery was later to be built, and waited 10 years to start using some of the plots. Today, more than two decades after they were first planted, the vines are firmly established, each with its own special characteristics. To make Salmos, they choose the beautiful La Giberga vineyard, located in the municipality of Porrera.
This wine is a tribute to the monks of the courageous Carthusian Order who arrived in the “Priory” in 1095, where they cultivated vineyards. In 1835 a violent mob destroyed their life’s work and looted the monastery, events that later culminated in an auction of church lands known as the “Desamortización de Mendizábal”.
In 1996, the Torres family began work on planting vineyards on the hillsides dotted with the hard black schist stone “Licorrea”.
The wine has a brilliant ruby red colour with garnet highlights. The nose reveals amazing floral (rose) and fruity (black cherry) aromas with subtle hints of herbs (thyme).
Lively and light-bodied on the palate, full of personality, well-structured with nice tannins and fresh acidity that bodes well for the future.
Great match for game and red meat. Pairs great with lamb and roast.
