Pian delle Vigne Brunello di Montalcino 2016
Pian delle Vigne has belonged to the Antinori family since 1995, the year of the first vintage of Pian delle Vigne. Pian delle Vigne has adopted the philosophy of aging in large barrels, which preserve the exceptional integrity of the Sangiovese grape and give Brunello’s characteristic vibrant elegance to the wine.
The Pian Delle Vigne estate is located 6 kilometres (3.5 mi) southwest of Montalcino. Its name comes from the area of the same name, where a characteristic nineteenth-century railway station is located.
The property consists of a total of 460 acres (184 ha), 160 of which (65 ha) are planted with vineyards generally southwest facing at an elevation of 430 feet (130 m) above sea level.
The picked grapes are taken to the cellar, de-stemmed, carefully crushed, then transferred to stainless steel tanks where alcoholic fermentation takes place. Maceration on the zips was continued for a period of approximately 15 days at a controlled temperature of 28 °C (82 °F).
After malolactic fermentation, the wine is transferred to oak barrels of varying capacities, between 30 and 80 hectoliters (793 – 2,113 gallons), where a two-year barrel aging period begins. Once the Pian delle Vigne has completed its ageing in oak, the wine is bottled and undergoes a long period of cellaring.
Pian delle Vigne Brunello di Montalcino 2016 has an intense ruby red colour. On the nose, complex aromas of ripe red fruits, cherries in particular, blend perfectly with light floral notes. Its bouquet is complemented by notes of chocolate, tobacco, cloves and aromatic and balsamic herbs.
Pian delle Vigne Brunello di Montalcino 2016 vintage expresses great finesse and elegance, giving the wine an excellent freshness accompanied by soft tannins and an extraordinary long finish.
The initial notes of tobacco and spice reappear on the finish. Pian delle Vigne Brunello pairs well with heavy meat dishes such as steak and game, paired with mushroom sauces. It can also accompany good pasta dishes, stews and powerful cheeses.
